Write a 750-word essay analyzing and describing a piece of music of your choice, using the information you learned from the first two weeks of class, especially the readings from Shelemay (“Characteristics of Sound”) and White (“The Promise of World Music.”) The piece you choose can be of any genre, and you should provide a link to a recording of the piece with your essay. This assignment should not require extensive library or web research, but if you do use outside sources, please indicate where your information is coming from in a footnote or in the text.The goal of this assignment is to practice using language to describe sound. We are developing some technical language to describe sound’s loudness, timbral qualities, pitch, and duration, but you can also use other descriptive language to analyze your chosen piece. How is the piece structured? Does it have sections that repeat? What are the instruments or voices in the piece? Are they sounds that you recognize, or are they unfamiliar? How would you describe their timbral quality? What about the dynamics of the piece? Is it all loud, or all soft, or does it change dynamics? How do the different instruments and voices relate to one another in the piece? Do they interact, or do they work independently? A little bit of both? Does the piece have harmony (more than one note at a time)? Is this harmony consonant (smooth) or dissonant (crunchy)? How do you evaluate the piece qualitatively? What is it about? Does it have lyrics? These are the kinds of questions you will want to consider as you analyze and describe your piece. You do not have to cover them all, but you should touch on some aspects of amplitude (dynamics or loudness), timbre, pitch (high or low, relative), any harmony, and duration (long or short, rhythmic patterns).
