Follow the instructions below for this module.

  1. Take the time to read the instructions (15mins)
  2. Read chapter 2 in Life of Reyita and take notes while you read the chapter (1-4 hours). Take notes following the instructions below.
  3. Prepare your commentary post (1 hour).
  4. Write your commentary/post and edit for spelling, organization, etc (1 hour).

Last module, I presented the characteristics of the testimonial literature.

For this module, you will continue to practice looking for the characteristics of testimonio in Chapter 2 of Life of Reyita.

As you read Chapter 2 (59-86), note examples of each characteristic of the testimonio listed in the lecture from last module. If you need a refresher, read the lecture in Module 3 – Internal Coloniziation and Testimonio Literature. Write down examples for each characteristic of testimonio.

Once you are done, organize your notes into an organized commentary.

First, organize the quotes and examples of characteristics you have found–you can cut them and organize them on a table, or rewrite them, or write numbers next to them, to organize the order in which you will use each example before you type up your commentary post.

In your commentary post, you need to do the following: prove to the class that Chapter 2 illustrates all of the characteristics of the testimonial.

First, write a thesis statement: Chapter 2 illustrates all of the characteristics of the testimonial literature because … .

Then, in organized paragraphs, refer to specific examples you have organized in your notes.

For each example, refer to page numbers. Examples must come from throughoutchapter 2, not just a part of the chapter, or the beginning of the chapter.

In your commentary/post, be sure to prove that Chapter 2 includes all 4 of the characteristics of the testimonial genre.

At the end of your commentary/post, include a question for classmates to answer.

In your question to classmates:

  1. focus on the reading–the goal is to get the class to interpret what we all read, read between the lines, ask each other how you understood xyz or what xyz symbolizes or how it relates to one of the class topics.
  2. Hypothetical questions and generic questions will not count as discussion questions. For example, do not ask: What would happen if…? Why do you think this person decided to do…..? What do you think about what this person did….?
  3. Take your time to write a thoughtful and relevant question. You can refer to a specific page in the chapter, and a specific concept from the lecture. For example, you can ask: On page …. what does Reyita reveal about….? On page …. what did you learn about…. in the Caribbean? When this person said/did …. is it an example of the impact of colonialism? Is ….. an example of …. in the reading about the Caribbean?
  4. Stay focused on the content (the information revealed) or the form (how the story is told).
  5. Steer clear of comments about how the story makes you feel; or your personal judgement of the characters; or generic comments about the Caribbean.
  6. Be specific – refer to a particular part of the reading.
