There are three DIFFERENT Assignments I WANT

Describe a moment when you felt something was being revealed to you—through nature, a conversation, a work of art, or an experience. How does this help you think about Johnson’s idea of God’s Spirit active in evolution and Dei Verbum’s claim that God “speaks to us as friends”? What tension do you see between personal experience and communal tradition in the way revelation works?

Guidelines

These discussions are designed to create collaborative and genuine engagement with big ideas—not “right” answers or summaries. Here’s what I’m looking for:

Your Initial Post:

Make it specific. Share a concrete insight, story, question, or connection. Show us how you’re thinking with it.

Connect ideas; refer to a reading or concept from the module to share how it intersects with your own experiences or questions.

Use your voice. We’re here to hear your perspective — what surprised, challenged, or moved you?

For Peer Responses:

Move the conversation forward. Don’t just agree — add a new angle, pose a question, share a related experience, or offer a respectful challenge.

• Write as if you’re having a meaningful conversation in person — clear, curious, and sincere. It’s okay to express uncertainty or ask questions.

Stay constructive and respectful. Disagreement is constructive only when its gentle and respectful — dismissiveness or sarcasm isn’t.

There’s no word count, but aim for a post that says something real — something you’ve thought about and that invites others to respond. If it feels like a tweet, it’s too short. If it’s a sermon, it’s probably too long. Think middle ground: reflective, clear, and conversational.

Theology in the Wild—Plan

You will submit a plan ahead of time, due at 11:59pm on the Friday of the week of the unit you chose (at the conclusion of the unit). Your reflection should briefly indicate where (there could be several places) you plan to look, why you intend to look for inspiration there, and what kind of thing you’re hoping to find.

Plans due Friday 11:59pm of the units you choose.

Assignment Overview:

Theology is everywhere in the world. Twice during the first 5 weeks of the course, you will find a theological connection in everyday life and reflect on it using the week’s theological themes. It could be a news story, a meme, a work of art, an overheard conversation, a social media post, music, or a scene from your neighborhood.

You will submit a photo, screenshot, or short media clip, plus a short written reflection that theologically interprets what you found. Your two assignments should be focused on different weeks. The first assignment should focus on either week 1 or 2, and the second should focus on week 3, 4, or 5.

Examples include a mural that evokes hope, a protest that raises questions about grace and power, an ad that presents certain visions of salvation, a billboard, TikTok, or news story with theological implications.

Theology in the Wild—Artifact and Reflection

You will submit the artifact and reflection, due at 11:59pm on the Tuesday following the conclusion of the unit chosen. Your reflection should detail where you found your artifact or conversation, what theological idea it communicates and embodies or challenges, how it does so (connecting with readings). Your reflection should more personally relate how/why it captured your attention and whether it satisfied what you were setting out to find.

Activity and reflections due 11:59pm on the Tuesday after the conclusion of the unit chosen.

As we move through each unit, I’m sure questions will emerge—about the readings, lecture materials, theological concepts, or how everything connects—probably something I didn’t explain well. This discussion board is a dedicated space for those questions and clarifications.

Feel free to post any questions that come up as you’re engaging with the material. I’ll be checking in regularly to respond, and I encourage you to read through your classmates’ posts and responses as well. Often, someone else’s question will help clarify something for you!

This space is meant to support your learning. There is no such thing as “bad” or “wrong” questions.
