Conduct a hazard analysis evaluation of two chemicals, one a liquid, and one a gas. The liquid you choose must be either Benzene or Acetone. The gas you choose must be either Anhydrous Ammonia, Chlorine, Carbon Monoxide, or Hydrogen Sulfide.

Your hazard analysis evaluation must include the following physical and chemical information for the liquid and for the gas (worth 20 points total for correct information for both gas and liquid in one table):

• the name of the chemical

• the chemical abstract ID number

• the UN ID number

• its DOT class and guide number

• the physical and chemical characteristics of the chemical, including, but not limited to, its molecular weight, its odor and appearance, its flash point, its flammable limits, its boiling point, its melting or freezing point, its specific gravity, its vapor density, and any other characteristic unique to its hazards. Make sure to use appropriate units!

The chemical’s human-health-protection limits found in OSHA’s PELs, NIOSH’s RELs, NIOSH’s IDLH levels, ACGIH’s TLVs, and EPA regulations for reportable quantities and threshold planning levels under SARA and CERCLA (5 point for each chemical for a total of 10 points possible)

Regulatory threshold quantities found in the EPA Regulations for 40 CFR 68 (EPA’s Risk Management Program) and in 29 CFR 1910.119 (OSHA’s Process Safety Management Program) (5 point for each chemical for a total of 10 points possible)

The personal-protection equipment required for handling the chemical both the routine workers (who handle the chemical on a regular basis) and the emergency responders (who handle the chemical only in emergency response situations) (5 point for each chemical for a total of 10 points possible)

The appropriate emergency response precautions and techniques that would protect and help emergency responders at an emergency incident scene. (5 point for each chemical for a total of 10 points possible)

We discussed in class that the priority in risk management is to prevent hazardous events.
