Historical Analysis: In The Country We Love

 Prompt:
Evaluate the significance of the personal story In the Country we Love in relation to our current U.S. society to the history of this time period that you have read about in this unit.
NOTE: this is not a personal evaluation of how you feel about the situation of Diane Guerrero or her family, nor your personal thoughts on immigration. It is an evaluation of the story in the book in relation to the history in the unit.
Assignment Directions:
Historical Analysis of the In the Country we Love will be 500-750 words (about 2-3 pages double-spaced) in length. An essential feature of a good historical analysis of a novel writer’s ability to write concisely so that a comprehensive evaluation of the book can be obtained from a brief reading.
In other words: do not write more, write more concisely— find creative ways to communicate your critical evaluation of the significance of the book in a short essay.
The point of this analysis is NOT to summarize the basic content/story of the book, but to situate the historical significance of the book. In the case of a personal story this means to evaluate the relationship of the person’s experience in connection to the historical content. 
So this essay is an evaluation of the book’s contribution to our understanding of important issues in modern U.S. history.
Among the features you will want to include in a strong analysis are:

A discussion of the author’s main purpose in regards to the history of the time-period.
A assessment of how does the book might change the way one should think about the subject (or about debated issues in the history of the modern U.S.).
Finally, you will want to make references to specific portions of the book to illustrate your evaluation. The challenge will be to do as much of this as possible and yet not let it interfere with the restricted length of the essay. In other words, find creative ways to give examples from the book in a limited space.
