How many moles of sodium chloride could be produced? How many grams of sodium chloride could be produced? How many grams of sodium chloride were produced? What is the percent yield of sodium chloride? Background:In a balanced chemical equation, the total number of atoms of each element must be the same on each side of the equation to satisfy the law of conservation of mass. The mole relationship given by the coefficients of the balanced chemical equation then allows the researcher to calculate how many moles of every other substance will take part in the reaction. In this experiment, we will investigate the quantitative relationships in the reaction between a known mass of NaHCO3 and an excess of HCl. (CO2 and H2O are also products)Knowing the mass of the NaHCO3 that reacts you can determine, from the balanced chemical equation, the mass of NaCl that should be produced. You can compare this theoretical value with the actual experimental mass of NaCl produced. This experiment should aid in the understanding of mass-mass relationships that exist in a chemical reaction and the interpretation of a balanced chemical equation.Procedure:Mass evaporating dish plus watch glass.Add ~2.50g of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in evaporating dish. Measure the mass of the evaporating dish, watch glass and the sodium bicarbonate.Cover dish with watch glass (curved side DOWN).Slowly add the 6M HCl to dish using the dropper until the reaction stops fizzing with the addition of HCl. Add at spout of dish. DO NOT REMOVE WATCH GLASS.Carefully tilt the dish back and forth a couple of times to ensure that ALL THE ACID HAS CONTACTED the sodium bicarbonate.GENTLY heat the dish by using a LOW flame and MOVING the burner back and forth to avoid splattering. With a little to no liquid left, increase the heat on the evaporation dish and heat strongly until no water is visible on the watch glass.Remove dish when no liquid remains. Allow to cool.Mass dish and watch glass and sodium chloride (product).Evaporating dish57.28Evaporating dish and watch glass95.85Evaporating dish and sodium bicarbonate60.23Evaporating dish, watch glass and salt97.78
