PART 1: DISCUSSION MODULE 5
Social Support
After studying “Navigating the doctoral experience: The role of social support in successful degree completion”
and “Finding your Tribe”
discuss the following:
Social integration is an important factor in doctoral student success. Originally identified in foundational work on student retention by Tinto (1975), researchers have confirmed over and over how social support (including from peers, family, friends, colleagues, advisors, faculty, and others) contribute to a student’s persistence and completion in higher education.
Who is part of your support system for your program (3 OF MY SISTER FRIENDS WHO HAVE COMPLETED AND ARE AT THE END OF COMPLETING DOCTORATES IN EDUCATION)? Describe how you plan to develop a support system to further your experience as a doctoral student. Identify specific ways in which you will rely on other individuals to help hold you accountable for completing your doctoral degree in your coursework and through the completion of your dissertation.
Submission Instructions:
Format your posts using APA Guidelines, including correct citation and reference formatting. Do not use direct quotes – paraphrase and cite accordingly.
Your initial post should be at least 350 words with support from at least two academic sources published in the last five years.
PART 2: Module 5 APA Activity: Paraphrasing vs. Direct Quotes
Paraphrasing vs. Direct Quotes
Learning to write using APA formatting and scholarly style guidelines can be a difficult transition for doctoral students. This transition can take a long time and, in reality, never really ends for many scholars. We are constantly challenged to improve our writing, as communicating our thoughts and ideas in the proper format and style is often as important as the ideas themselves.
Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to complete APA Style activities as a way to introduce and polish your scholarly writing. This week you will learn about paraphrasing versus direct quotes.
Providing scholarly evidence in your writing is important. Referring to outside sources gives you more credibility. However, unlike undergraduate or even Master’s-level writing, simply using direct quotations is not sufficient to support your position and demonstrate your understanding. You need to give credit to the author of your source to avoid plagiarism, but you do not need to use their exact words.
At the doctoral level, you are expected to synthesize multiple sources of evidence in your own voice when writing. As a result, you should be paraphrasing and summarizing as opposed to using direct quotes in your writing. You need to give credit to the author of your source to avoid plagiarism, but you should not be quoting them directly.
Examples:
Direct quote citation: Denver (1971) stated that “sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy” and further that “sunshine all the time makes me smile.”Paraphrased citation: Sunshine can improve your mood (Denver, 1971).
Practice: Find a peer-reviewed journal article and read the Abstract. Summarize the Abstract in one sentence by paraphrasing and citing accordingly. Include a copy of the Abstract and a properly formatted Reference for the article with your one-sentence summary.
Submission Instructions:
· In a Word document, copy the abstract from a published peer-reviewed journal article, then summarize it in one sentence by paraphrasing and cite according to current APA format.
