The National Association for Sport and Physical Education last revised its recommendations for physical education in 2004. There were numerous groups participating in physical education at the time (Kelly, 2019). The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance was a confederation of five organizations. Five fundamental anchor standards form the foundation of the national SHAPE America standards. These anchor standards show what a person who is physically literate is capable of doing and are valid for every grade level. Standard 1: The physically literate person exhibits proficiency in a range of motor abilities and movement patterns (Lacy & Williams, 2018). Standard 2: The physically literate person applies knowledge of ideas, tenets, and methods relevant to performance and movement. Standard 3: The physically literate person exhibits the knowledge and abilities needed to reach and sustain a level of physical activity and fitness that is beneficial to their health.
