In my elementary school of roughly 200 pupils in a little town in Middle America, I recall being one of only two Asian children. My older brother was the other Asian child. Thien*, a different Vietnamese student, eventually joined my class. Thien struggled to fit in at school and had trouble communicating in English. He had trouble with his academics and had trouble making friends. My teachers urged me to assist him because they didn’t know how to (Hua, 2019). They believed that if I interacted with him, assisted him with his studies, and developed a friendship with him, his condition would get better. Although my efforts got off to a decent start, sadly, things only got worse. I think Thien felt the same way about me because I hated him. I realize how unjust this was for us both in retrospect. Thien, an immigrant kid, faced racism from his peers while also having difficulty understanding English in a school which lacked the means to help him. I had to change my academic schedule in order to support Thien as his tutor and supporter in ways that the school was unable to. I was a Vietnamese-American student. Now that I look back, I see that I never felt resentment at my school, the director, or my professors for placing me in that circumstance. I only had resentment for Thien.
