Scenario: An elderly couple named Jim and Judy live in a quiet neighborhood One night, Jim falls asleep on the couch, and during the night, Judy wakes up to find a strange man rummaging through the drawers of their bedroom. Alarmed, the intruder runs out of the bedroom towards the front door. Judy runs after the intruder and just as he is opening the door, she takes hold of the door and starts to slam it against him while screaming at her husband to call the police. The intruder escapes and is later caught down the street. Judy is asked to make a one-on-one identification, and she discovers the intruder is a troubled young adult that lives a few houses down with his grandparents. After the arrest, Judy and Jim must deal with damages to the house during the break-in plus missing valuables – some recovered and some not.
Emotionally, Judy is still haunted by the incident. Physically, she screamed so hard and loud that she permanently injured her vocal cords. A short time later, she is summoned to testify in court, but she is not sure if she wants to do it. The intruder is still in custody but, because this was a property crime, the length of the sentence would not be long and he would likely return to living down the street with his family.
If this were to happen to you or someone you know, identify services and interventions available to victims of crime through the criminal justice system as a whole. Describe the programs and explain their specific purpose in relation to this case. Also consider long-term effects such as continued fear of being revictimized and their effects on the victim’s mental and physical health.
