Workbook Expectations
The purpose of this workbook is to:
Relate theory to practice regarding a woman’s experience of pregnancy, childbirth, care of the newborn baby, the postnatal period, and its impact on the new family.
identify and appreciate the roles of a range of community support services available to the new family in relation to pregnancy, childbirth, care of the new born, infant feeding and the post-natal period.
Complete a portfolio of information relevant and important for a New Zealand Registered Nurse to practice safely.
INSTRUCTIONS
To complete this workbook:
Complete the activities included in the document “Preparation for the Workbook”
and in particular the activity around Informed Consent before obtaining consent from
your participant.
Seek a woman and her family who have had a baby in New Zealand, ask her to be
interviewed about her experiences of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal experiences
and obtain informed consent. Please refer to the last three pages of this document.
Student copy: you keep (do not submit your project with the consent form attached.
Lecturer copy: submit to the moddle page before beginning the project.
Participant copy: remains with the family. (During the lockdown time a digital signature is accepted).
Family contact
It is highly likely this workbook will commence during the lockdown time. If so, you may interview your participant over the telephone / skype.
To complete this workbook it is recommended that you negotiate 2-3 visits / telephone calls, skype sessions rather than one long visit.
Practicum /clinical time is credited to you, and you have allocated time to write up the clinical project.
The emphasis is on your participant’s experience and how their experience relate
to theory and the literature.
Please use references for the theoretical information you use.
Due to the size of this portfolio, and to support the efficient completion, your class will have topics allocated to them to complete and provide you with the background information (refer to the document: Preparation for the Workbook).
You will use these references to support your knowledge base during the interviews and include the contributions in your individual portfolios as appendices. This process allows you to have a summary document for your future reference and revision for the NCNZ state exam.
Much of the information and theory has already been presented to you in the course HCBN 7103 Knowledge for Nursing Practice.
Your New Family lecturer is available to offer support as necessary throughout the project.
As you are representing Unitec Nursing during the interview process, please act respectfully and provide necessary identification.
Submission of your workbook
As this is a practicum /clinical project, tables and information obtained during the course HCBN 7103 / 7104 may be included as appendices. All tables and appendices need to include references and appendices linked to assignment content.

FIRST VISIT / DISCUSSION Informed Consent (Refer to Appendix one)
Before commencing this workbook, complete the activity about informed consent (refer to the document preparation for the portfolio: Appendix one).
Write a brief account of the process you followed (what you did) to obtain informed consent from your participant/s: (the mother and family).
Please support your writing with references to the literature (use a minimum of two
references about informed consent) Maintain confidentiality.
NCNZ Competency 1.1. Indicator: Practises nursing in accord with relevant legislation/codes/policies
and upholds client rights derived from that legislation.
SECOND VISIT / DISCUSSION Pregnancy and Birth (Refer to Appendices two and three)
Finding health care providers.
When first pregnant, how did your participant and family gain access to antenatal care services. Were there challenges? How did they resolve them?
Discomforts of pregnancy.
Discuss with your participant her experience of any discomforts of pregnancy and her ways of relieving the discomfort.
Where was she able to find health education material about these issues? Was it easy to understand? What other information would have benefited her and her family at that time?
Include your findings in the project and link to the literature and theory.
Adjustments
Talk with the participant and family (if possible) about adjustments they made during the pregnancy. What support information would have been helpful at this time?
Health care and support services offered to pregnant women and their families (Refer to Appendix 3)
What support or information would have been helpful during the time of pregnancy and prior to childbirth? What services / health care was helpful and what was not?
Outline any advice your participant’s partner can offer to other partners?
If the above is not possible outline information from the literature about adjustments that are typically made during this period by the father /partner and the family.
Birth:
Ask your participant to share her experience of labour and child’s birth with you.
Briefly outline her experience and the support that she received during the birthing process. What actions / interventions helped her? What would she change for next time? Did she have a birth plan? How did the actual experience relate to this plan? (max.3/4 page)
If appropriate, ask the father /partner to outline their response to the birth experience. If not include experiences of other fathers/ partners either from your readings or others.
The Post-natal Period / Puerperium and the Newborn Baby
Discuss with your participant her expectations of the puerperium/ postnatal period while she was pregnant and how the actual experiences compared to her original expectations.
If appropriate ask the partner to relate to you adjustments they made as a result of their experience of becoming a parent. If not, from general discussion with other parents include a statement about general adjustments new parents need to make.
Summary of support services for families’ during the postnatal time
(Refer to Appendix Four)
Relate your findings to the experience of your client and her family.
What resources were considered helpful / unhelpful for the family? Were they aware of them? What support would they have preferred or needed that was not available.
Discuss potential reasons why some families and individuals may not utilise health support services at this time. Include also how access could be improved for families. Make reference to the social, cultural and economic determinants of health in your writing. Support your ideas with references from the literature (approx. 250 words)
The Newborn Baby (Refer to Appendices 5, 6, 7 and 8)
Outline an assessment of the newborn. (This is a brief theoretical assessment completing the Newborn assessment template provided on moodle). Include the rationale for each assessment.
Competency 2.2. Indicator
Undertakes assessment in an organised and systematic way.
Ask your participant if they had heard about the terms:
physiological weight loss / physiological jaundice and meconium and if they were
surprised when their baby showed these changes.
Outline what information a new mother needs to manage physiological jaundice and actions to take if not improving.
Ask your participant about their experience of the health provider taking the assessments of her baby (weight, length/ height / head circumference / developmental changes, and the assessment of hearing and vision )
Was it a learning experience and did the experience support them to gain confidence in their parenting skills? How did they find the information in the Tamariki Ora Health book?
INFANT FEEDING AND NUTRITION
(Refer to Appendices nine, ten eleven. twelve and thirteen).
Discuss with your participant her choice of feeding her baby. Ask what influenced her choice.
Breast Feeding:
Summarise your participant’s experience of breast-feeding (if appropriate).
What information did she receive about breast-feeding?
What support did she get? How did she feel about this support?
When weaning, ask how she obtained information about formula feeding and sterilising bottles and teats (See below)
How did she know her baby was hungry or had had enough to drink?
Formula Feeding:
Summarise your mother’s experience of formula feeding (if appropriate). Where did she find information to guide her?
If your participant has not fed her baby formula milk outline what information a mother would need and where mothers are able to access this information from.
Introduction of solid foods
How did your participant decide when to begin solid foods for her baby? What
foods did she introduce first? Where did she obtain information? Was it clear or
confusing?
If your participant has not yet introduced solid foods to her baby outline what
information a mother would need and where mothers are able to access this
information from.
Guidelines when to take a baby child to the doctor. (Tamariki Ora Health book page two.
With reference to principles of health literacy do you think that the information about
when a parent should take their baby to a doctor is clear. Explain.
(think of amount of writing on one page, reliance on words, some medical terms
eg convulsions etc).

Reflect on your experience and write about your learning and time management in completing the project.
