Scope of Practice for a Nurse Innovator (1b)
Consensus Idea: Number 6, virtual education classes for breastfeeding, baby basics, and prenatal was chosen as the innovative idea to implement. It had support because it provided the most benefits to patients and their families. COVID has caused a large drop in mothers and their spouses coming into the hospital to participate in educational classes before giving birth. This has caused mothers to be admitted without the proper prenatal education to take care of their newborns after delivery. Nurses and lactation consultants are encumbered with providing extensive education to the new mothers within the 48-hour window they are in the hospital, while still having to perform their normal duties.
Communication Plan (3a)
After completing the meeting and coming to a consensus on the innovative idea, the group reviewed the PowerPoint presentation and updated it based on the comments and recommendations. The following plan was created to communicate the idea to the key staff:
A meeting with nurse managers was set to discuss deficiencies in the education of incoming mothers. Any concerns would be emphasized in the preparation of the virtual education classes.
The clinical educator was set to discuss the change to online education with a few mothers attending the next in-person prenatal class and get feedback.
The clinical educator set a meeting with the lactation consultants to begin reviewing online presentation materials based on the existing in-person classes, integrating any input from the nurse managers.
The director set a meeting with the CNO to get the funding for the online education classes approved.
The director set a meeting with IT to go over any technology that may be needed to implement the idea.
Training Plan (3b)
There are three major groups to be trained including the education staff, lactation consultants, and nurse managers and floor nurses.
Education staff will be trained on the online class presentations by the clinical educator. This training will include being versed in the actual presentations for each class as well as mock Q&A sessions to be able to provide answers to questions that may not be covered in the presentations.
Lactation consultants will need to understand what is being taught in the online classes before delivery so they may guide the mothers in the same way as they were taught in the online classes. The clinical educator will provide this training.
The nurse managers and floor nurses will need to be trained similarly to the lactation consultants to provide guidance in a manner consistent with the class information. Either the clinical education staff will provide this training.
