Religious leaders in Denver, Colorado established the Charity Organization Society in 1887. This organization was the first United Way organization and was responsible for the planning and coordination of local services as well as the administration of a single fundraising campaign for 22 different organizations. The total amount raised by the initial fundraising effort was $21,700. The first Community Chest in the United States was established in the city of Cleveland, Ohio, in the year 1913 (Stubbs, 2020). There, a system for distributing monies was devised as part of the initiative. Up to the 1950s, United Way organizations were commonly referred to by their former name, Community Chest. From 1919 through 1948, there was an increase in the number of Community Chests from 39 to more than 1,000. There are currently over 1,300 local United Ways operating in towns all throughout the United States.
