Sport Empowerment for All

Sport has the ability to empower people of all ages and abilities by providing a sense of belonging, accomplishment, and self-esteem. According to a 2018 article published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, participation in physical activity, including sport, has been linked to improved mental health, increased self-esteem and body image, and increased feelings of social connectedness and community involvement (Gao, et al., 2018). There are several ways in which sport can be used to empower people of all ages and abilities. One approach is through the implementation of inclusive sports programs, which are designed to allow individuals with disabilities to participate alongside their non-disabled peers. These programs often require the use of specialized equipment and adaptations, such as wheelchair basketball or adapted golf carts. Another way to empower individuals through sport is through the use of adapted sports, which are modified versions of traditional sports that can be played by individuals with disabilities.
