Flint, Thomas P. “On the Significance of Civil War References in Flannery O’Connor’s ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’.” Renascence, vol. 70, no. 2, Spring 2018, n.pag. ProQuest, https://search-proquest-com.proxy189.nclive.org/docview/2085067178?pq-origsite=summon +19/20
Thomas P. Flint has written his essay to evaluate the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor. The author is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame and also a faculty fellow at Notre Dame’s London Global Gateway. The essay was published in 2018, making it a relevant and current source of information. The author does not introduce other texts in his essay, choosing to focus only on the short story. Flint asserts that one of the main morals of the story is how individuals have a hard time figuring out how justice should be given. He uses historic criticism to link his claim to the text. Flint uses the Civil War, an event that O’Connor and individuals living in the South during the time “A Good Man is Hard to Find” was written would still be living with the effects of, to direct the reader’s attention to certain aspects of the story. Flint points out that the O’Connor has made several references to the Civil War, such as Stone Mountain and the grandmother’s mentioning of Sherman. This, and the other references that Flint brings to light, is new information to me. The author is thorough in providing textual evidence to back up his evaluation of Flannery O’Connor’s short story. This source provides a new way of viewing and understanding the message in “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”
Rea, Robert. “Flannery O’Connor’s Murderous Imagination: Southern Ladyhood in ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’.” Southwest Review, vol.102, no. 2, 2017, n.pag., ProQuest, https://search-proquest-com.proxy189.nclive.org/docview/2116329971?pq-origsite=summon
Robert Rea is a Professor of American Literature at the University of Mississippi. He has written his essay to assert his judgment that O’Connor’s story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” should be read as a parody with the grandmother’s character playing the role of the humorous heroine. Rea devotes the beginning of his essay to share an opposing view before he begins making his case for his opinion of the work. The essay was written in 2017, thus providing a contemporary view into O’Connor’s work. Rea believes O’Connor’s work to be innovative and “supremely cutting-edge.” The author uses feminist criticism to find the meaning of the story. He discusses the text in chronological order, allowing the reader to see how the story unfolds. The author discusses books and movies that were relevant at the time O’Connor wrote her short story to show how she used the grandmother’s character to mock the idea of the Southern belle. Rea examines similarities between the story the grandmother tells the children and Tennessee Williams’s play, The Glass Menagerie. He also brings to attention how the grandmother’s remark about the movie, Gone with the Wind, is O’Connor’s way of letting the reader know that the grandmother has seen the movie and been affected by it. Rea also believes that O’Connor may have been influenced by Jean-Paul Sarte’s essay on Faulkner’s “The Sound and Fury.” Through his essay, the author has provided adequate evidence to support his claim that O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” provides a fresh take on the notion of the Southern belle.
