The smallest piece of stuff that can be destroyed without releasing electrically charged particles is believed to be an atom. Because the three subatomic particles that make up an atom are known to exist, an atom is said to be electrically neutral. These subatomic particles are neutrons, electrons, and protons (He et al., 2019). The structure of an atom, which consists of a nucleus (core) that has both protons, which are positively charged, and neutrons, which are neutral, is referred to as having a “atomic structure.” The total number of protons in the nucleus of an element is denoted by the element’s atomic number, and the center of the nucleus is surrounded by the negatively charged particles known as electrons. Additionally, neutral atoms have an equal number of protons and electrons. However, atoms can gain or lose electrons to increase their stability. A neutral atom is one that has no charge. For instance, a neutral sodium atom has an atomic number of 11, which denotes that it has both 11 protons and 11 electrons. An atom has an equal amount of protons (positively charged) and electrons (negatively charged) (Ishihara, 2018).
