I value the various unique experiences I’ve had when I look back on my life. I’ve been around diversity since I was a baby. My hometown of Moss Point, Mississippi, which was the last state to abolish slavery, is a small rural community. 13,704 individuals make up the town’s current population, with 73% of them being Black or African Americans, 23% being Caucasian, 1% being Hispanic or Latino, and 1% being mixed-race (Gomez & Bernet, 2019). Despite the homogeneous population in my town, I was raised to value diversity and individual distinctions, even within the same racial group. The numerous religious practices practiced by members of the Black community were one of the first diverse experiences I can clearly remember. My parents considered “exposure to the world around you” to be one of the most important elements in developing a well-rounded child. As a result, we frequently went to numerous churches of various faiths. My own family practiced a variety of doctrines (Gopalkrishnan, 2018).
